William Peter Blatty, the author and Oscar-winning screenwriter of the horror classic The Exorcist, has died at the age of 89.

William Friedkin, who directed the film, first broke the news of Blatty's passing on Twitter.

After a few years of that, however, Blatty returned to novel-writing and emerged from a woodland retreat with The Exorcist, the story of a young girl possessed by a terrifying demon and the priest dispatched to help her.

The book was an immediate hit, spending more than a year on the New York Times bestseller list, and moving more than 10 million copies throughout its print run. The film was nominated for Best Picture at the 1981 Golden Globe Awards, though lost out to On Golden Pond. "So long, Old Bill", he shared. He also wrote and directed the 1980 film adaptation of his book The Ninth Configuration, as well as 1990's The Exorcist III, which was based on his novel Legion.

Fox aired a critically acclaimed, sequel series in 2016 called The Exorcist, featuring characters from Blatty's original work.

"He was an absolutely wonderful, kind, generous, faith-filled man, and I was very blessed to be his wife", Julie Blatty said.

The son of Lebanese immigrants, Blatty was born into poverty in NY and graduated from Georgetown University before earning his living as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.

Although best-known for The Exorcist, Blatty specialized in comedy, penning Promise Her Anything (1965), which starred Warren Beatty, What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? .
