Sir David Clementi confirmed as new BBC chairman

Prime Minister is advised to appoint Clementi as BBC chair

Clementi was confirmed as preferred candidate for the post by prime minister Theresa May following his nomination by culture secretary Karen Bradley ahead of a formal transition to the new unitary board on 1 April.

Sir David authored the 2016 report which recommended scrapping the BBC Trust and changing the way the corporation was run. The government adopted the recommendations and in May said it would abolish the BBC Trust, the self-regulatory body previously charged with overseeing the BBC.

A highly-political job, accompanied by significant media scrutiny, the chair must set the editorial direction of the whole BBC, implement cost savings of £800m by 2020 and act as the BBC's public face when scandals hit.

The Guardian said Clementi was on a DCMS shortlist that also included John Makinson, the chairman of book publisher Penguin Random House, and Civil Aviation Authority chair Dame Deirdre Hutton.

Jim Furyk named United States Captain for 2018 Ryder Cup
The United States have not won the event overseas since a 15-13 success at The Belfry back in 1993. The PGA of America announced Wednesday that Jim Furyk will captain the 2018 U.S.

Members of Parliament on the culture, media and sport committee must interview the candidate and approve the appointment before it becomes official.

Sir David said: "The BBC is a world-class broadcaster and one of the UK's most beloved and cherished institutions. It would be a great honor to join the BBC at an important time in the organization's history".

The relationship between the Chairman and his Director-General, Tony Hall, will be crucial. In September, BBC Trust chairwoman Rona Fairhead said she would not apply to be chair of the new board.

United Kingdom public broadcaster the BBC is nearing the appointment of a new chairman. "That means recognising it is not simply a big communications company". It is more complex than a simple business with a profit and loss sheet to be reflected on.
