Amazon removes doormats with Tricolour

She wrote on Twitter on Wednesday that Amazon "must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately" or "we will not grant Indian visa to any Amazon official".

The global e-tailer Amazon India has written an apology letter to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj over the sale of doormats depicting the tricolor and informed her about the removal of the product from its Canadian website.

Amazon has written to Swaraj expressing regret at hurting Indian sensibilities, Vikas Swarup, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, said January 12. "At no time did we intend or mean to offend Indian sentiments". She also asked acting High Commissioner of Canada to India, Arun Kumar Sahu, to lodge a protest with the top brass of Amazon.

A copy of the letter was also tweeted by Sushma Swarup in which Amazon said the items were posted by a third party and that they have taken the items down.

The product described as "Chukka Canvas shoes", priced at $43.99 (Rs 3,000 approximately), and shoe lace accessories ($4.49 or Rs 300) are available on Amazon from a Los Angeles-based company N.Y.L.A.

Before withdrawing the product, Amazon sought to reassure angry and concerned Twitter users, saying the mats were not being sold their Indian portal and that the issue was being dealt with.

With a warning already sent out to Amazon for indecent representation of the Indian national flag by the External Affairs ministry, we are yet to know how the ministry will react to the new developments. 'We will also rescind the Visas issued earlier'.

Amazon Canada must be censured and warned not to sell India flag doormats. The product is listed as "Indian coat of arms seal dog t-shirt" and is priced at $19.99 (Rs 1362).

In an event attended by Indian premier Narendra Modi in Washington past year, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said India was the company's fastest growing region.

The doormats with the Indian flag on it were being sold as "personalised machine-washable durable indoor/outdoor welcome doormats".
