Akhilesh Meets Mulayam But No Truce Yet

Family In The Way: An Akhilesh-Mulayam patch-up looks remote as warring Yadavs knock on EC's doors

The long-drawn battle within the Yadav clan refuses to die down, as prospects of rapprochement between Samajwadi Party (SP) patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav appear faint at present.

The father-son duo met for nearly 90 minutes alone on Tuesday morning, but refrained from making any official comment. The convention was attended by the majority of SP MLAs, MPs and office bearers, and Akhilesh was crowned the new national president while Mulayam was elevated to the position of margdarshak.

Another factional wrangle emerged when loyalists of dethroned SP state chief Shivpal Yadav was stopped from entering the party headquarters in the state capital by police.

However, it seems, the CM has refused to budge.

He said that work on replacement could be done in a gradual, piecemeal fashion. She said the latest numbers prove there is a growing appetite for the law.

In the power struggle perilously close to the elections, while Akhilesh Yadav has accused Shivpal Yadav and Amar Singh of instigating Mulayam Singh against him, his father's camp has targeted his uncle and staunch supporter Ram Gopal Yadav, accusing him of misguiding Akhilesh. The meeting transpired after Mulayam Singh's surprise announcement on Monday night claiming that there is no question of the party splitting and Akhilesh Yadav will continue to be the CM. "Netaji is ready to give him the authority to select candidates but he is not ready to compromise on the national president's post", said a senior SP leader who met Mulayam on Tuesday. Either camp is also not willing to make the first move on withdrawing its petition before the Election Commission for claim on the party name and symbol. Mulayam insists Ram Gopal stands expelled from the party for six years.

The "cycle" symbol faces the threat of being frozen before the seven-phase Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls if the Election Commission is not able to decide which of the two factions of the party commands majority in the organisation.

Akhilesh is also expected to roll out his campaign plan across UP.
